The Galapagos Islands are often considered a dream destination, and for good reasons. This unique archipelago, teeming with diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes, is a place that truly feels like a step into another world. For many travelers, the traditional method of exploring the Galapagos is via a 5- to 7-day boat excursion, but I decided to take a different route, one that allowed me to experience the islands from the comfort and flexibility of land-based accommodations.
Getting to the Galapagos: The Journey Begins
Before diving into the magic of the islands, it's worth noting that getting to the Galapagos is a journey in itself. It takes a few planes, boats, taxis, and buses to reach the islands, so prepare for a full day of travel in each direction. Most travelers need to overnight in either Guayaquil or Quito, and while Quito is often the most convenient, I chose to stop in Guayaquil. This allowed me the chance to explore a little more of Ecuador's highlands or simply relax before the next leg of the trip.
A Layover in Guayaquil: Hotel del Parque
We decided to make our layover in Guayaquil, and I highly recommend the Hotel del Parque for a restful stopover. Located just 15 minutes from the airport, this hotel offered a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of travel. The property was impeccably maintained, spacious, and well-appointed. The cherry on top was the Casa Julia, an on-site restaurant that served some of the best meals we had during our time in Ecuador. If you're looking for a comfortable, top-notch place to stay during your layover, Hotel del Parque should be at the top of your list.
Arriving in the Galapagos: Finch Bay Hotel
After our layover, we made our way to the Galapagos Islands, where we stayed at the Finch Bay Hotel—without a doubt, the best property on the islands. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the professionalism and warmth of the staff. The service was impeccable, and they made us feel like we were part of their family. The hotel itself was located just a short boat ride from downtown Puerto Ayora, the main town on Santa Cruz Island, which meant we had easy access to local shops, restaurants, and the vibrant island atmosphere.
The Finch Bay Hotel is a great spot for those looking for a combination of relaxation and adventure. The island’s diverse ecosystem is just a stone's throw away, and the staff was happy to help us arrange a variety of day excursions—both on land and at sea.
Exploring the Islands: Land and Sea Adventures
During our six-night stay, we took full advantage of the hotel's excursion offerings. We spent days out on the water, snorkeling with sea lions, watching dolphins frolic beside our boat, and hiking across volcanic islands. One of the highlights was a boat tour to Bartholomew Island, an uninhabited volcanic island known for its dramatic scenery. It was a picture-perfect experience that included spectacular snorkeling and a couple of beautiful hikes that gave us incredible views of the islands.
Back on land, we enjoyed a number of tours and activities close to the hotel. A hike to Las Grietas, a unique geological formation, was a must. The walk began just half a mile from Finch Bay, and the crystal-clear water and towering cliffs were a sight to behold. Another must-visit spot was the Charles Darwin Research Station. This educational walking tour allowed us to learn about the region's flora and fauna, as well as the ongoing conservation efforts that have made the Galapagos such a vital part of ecological research.
We also had the opportunity to take a guided walking tour of the Highlands on Santa Cruz Island. This 4-hour tour took us to the island’s highest elevations, where we visited giant sinkholes, explored a lava tunnel, and even spent time at a tortoise sanctuary. Seeing the iconic Galapagos tortoises up close was an unforgettable experience.
A Family Trip: Perfect for Kids (and Adults!)
We visited the Galapagos with our son when he was 16, and while the trip was incredible, in hindsight, the islands might be even more enjoyable for families with children between the ages of 8 and 12. The wildlife and natural beauty are endlessly fascinating for younger kids, and the combination of easy hikes, boat tours, and hands-on wildlife experiences are perfect for engaging them in a way that’s both educational and fun.
Final Thoughts: A Bucket List Experience
The Galapagos Islands are undoubtedly a destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. Whether you choose to explore by land or by sea, the islands offer a wealth of experiences that are unlike anywhere else on Earth. The Finch Bay Hotel was the perfect base for our exploration, combining comfort with easy access to the island’s wonders.
If you're planning a trip, be prepared for a journey that requires patience and a bit of extra time for travel logistics. However, once you arrive, the islands reward you with some of the most incredible nature experiences imaginable. From snorkeling in crystal-clear waters to hiking through volcanic landscapes and encountering wildlife that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before, the Galapagos is truly a place that will stay with you long after you leave.
